How Sanden streamlined motor controls development with HIL

24 Jun 2026
Automotive Testing Stage 1
Intelligent test technologies: virtualization and validation
Sanden improved the development of electric motor controls by introducing Opal-RT's hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing solution. MIL testing was accelerated to real time, cutting total parameter and model iteration time from half a day to minutes, and accelerating tuning and exploration of control strategies. Engineers doubled test coverage, safely validating edge cases such as compressor stall, voltage disturbances and inverter faults while using a minimal hardware setup. Decoupling software testing from hardware availability combined with test automation procedures, Sanden enabled early error detection and process acceleration. Total time savings reach to 2-3 months in the development and validation process.
  • How Sanden reduced total motor controls development time by 2-3 months
  • How to double test coverage while saving time and money for any power electronics controller development
  • Further improvement possibilities with test automation
  • How easy it can be to leverage FPGA's for fast HIL simulation using Opal-RT's eHS solver and NI Veristand
  • What the optimum virtual testing scheme with SIL/MIL, HIL and Power-HIL for motor controls development looks like
